Beenleigh 5 Year Old Dark Rum
This dark rum is from Australia and as the title suggests, is aged for five years. It mostly smells of alcohol with a hint of vanilla which makes you think 'hey this could be quite strong'. But don't let that budge you; Beenleigh rum is actually quite nice on the throat and there's little to no alcohol burn. As far as the taste goes you are going to be overwhelm with a strong spices filled flavour which definitely makes this rum unique compared to any other. This spice will be followed by a vanilla aftertaste which will linger around for about a minute or so. I'm a fan of the vanilla so this part I don't mind. As for the spice taste, I can't seem to figure out whether I like it or not so I continue to try more.
The Bar Test
The smell is mostly of vanilla for this one but not like a vanilla coke. It's different. As far as the taste goes, to keep it straightforward, there's an overpowering spice at the front and vanilla towards the end. That's mostly it. It goes well with coke but it seems like the exact same flavour from the shot has remained intact. Unlike the usual change of flavour with the added coke for many other drinks we've tried.
This is a tasty Australian rum which is reasonably priced for what you get. It has it's own unique taste that feels totally different from any other rum but ultimately it doesn't seem like something that we would actively look for. I recommend you the reader to try it as it's definitely an interestingly flavoured drink and we loved drinking it but it's not really something we would consider buying again.
1. It's smells bad and it tastes bad. The one to one ratio does not work well together. It's rather bitter. Pickled carrot? Consider adding more coke.
2. An improvement at this point but still not great. It's less bitter and the smell isn't as overpowering and intrusive as earlier.
3. Major improvement here. It's the best so far. It's tasty.
4. Amazing vanilla smell. It seems the more coke you add the more vanilla it becomes.
