Chivas Regal 12 Year Old Whisky
We were a huge fan of the smell of this bad boy, but I guess it was pretty much the kind of scent you'd expect from a whisky. However, if you manage to get your nostrils passed the veil of death, there lies an undoubtedly sweet smell, perhaps fruity with a mild hint of vanilla. You'll really need to poke your nose in there though and try not to think of the water you're losing from your wincing eyes.
This is pretty easy to drink, absolutely no burn, completely unaggressive. Kind of has a fruity / nutty flavour with an oaky finish. Soon as you swallow, you've entered a whole new ballgame. There's a lovely burn, a punch in the nuts and a slap in the face. I mean it's not that bad, but it's definitely a shock to the system. The taste experience feels something like meeting a horrible person, who turns out to be lovely once you get to know them, but you just can't get them out of your life. That flavour lingers.
The Bar Test
Chivas has a lovely kind of fruity scent to it. It's quite a sweet smell for a scotch. As you're drinking it, you discover quite a dry, oaky, fruity general mix of flavours, but boy, is it smooth. The overall flavour really dissipates quite quickly and remains unaggressive the entire time. Definitely a better, more fulfilling and heartwarming beverage with coke. It's a simple, reasonably priced and easy scotch to drink with coke plus most bars tend to stock it. Not the best we've had, but it'll satisfy.
We recommend drinking it with coke. Probably wouldn't recommend drinking it neat, but perhaps you would like it on the rocks if you love your scotches. Would recommend this for more of a small night / intimate gathering kind of setting, where not only do you mostly stay sober, you look a little fancy, but not too fancy. I think I'd stick to something a little cheaper and easier to drink if I wanted to have a big night, however I do know that this is a preference to some people. To those people, who am I to judge you? mwah
- Back to being on the nose here. Doesn't scream drink me. Kind of tastes like bitter apples, not overly pleasant, unless you're into that.
- Sweet, oaky and woody tastes push the fruity flavour to the backseat here. Still didn't blow our mind, still isn't great, but it isn't too bad. Has a fruity smell now though.
- Kind of smells like cardboard at this point, but that's cool, it's cool that Chivas isn't afraid to just do things its own way. Kind of tastes like it has more of a Bourbon brand of sweetness here with an oddly, smooth taste as well. Might make you forget how to speak when you first try it like this, blinding you with its beauty.
- Kind of smells like lolly water. The flavour is nervous here and takes a little bit to show up to the party for its fear of rejection, but it kind of only really has a fruity tang. Not bad, but quite diluted.
