Green Fairy Absinth

Green Fairy Absinth

The Shot

With a beautiful pale green colour similar to that of the fourth horseman of the apocalypse and a smell that helps remind you of death, no-one can say no to a healthy shot of absinth before a night out. Similar to having a kale smoothy to start the day.

The shot tastes very much like aniseed / liquorice, with a very slight burn that tickles your mouth and throat. I dare say this is less intense than Maker's 46 when shot, but it has the added advantage of a much higher alcohol content. I'm personally a big fan of the taste of absinth, however the Alcoholic says "I don't know how you like this sh*t" and that upon hitting his tongue he is overcome with the need to vomit.

Our resident guest tester, El Nico, described a shot of absinth "like someone put too much chlorine in a pool"

The Bar Test

In the bar test glass, the absinth still strongly sports the scent of aniseed. As soon as the heavenly liquid graces your lips however, you will instantly notice that the fizz of the coke vanishes leaving you with flat coke and absinth. Luckily, the absinth overpowers the taste of the coke entirely, though the absinth taste is weakened and it leaves you with a watery aftertaste and basically no alcohol burn. This is definitely more pleasant to drink than its brother in Dabel, but I personally would prefer to shot it unless you are drinking it with vanilla coke instead of normal coke.

Recommendations

Definitely recommend drinking this on a big night, it'll certainly keep your head in the clouds, however it is an excellent way to get your head in the game to boost confidence on a quiet night as well. Not everyone likes absinth, so you've definitely got to try it at least once, however if you don't like it straight, one of my favourite ways to drink absinth is to mix it with vanilla coke. The coke and absinth flavours kind of cancel each other out and leave you with a lovely vanilla flavoured drink.

Coke-O-Meter

  1. Strong liquorice flavour. That's about it really.
  2. Tastes like sweet liquorice flavoured water. It's kinda cool, interesting and noticeably syrupy.
  3. At three shots of coke, it tastes quite watery, reminiscent of the bar test sample. The coke seems to like evaporate though. Even the Alcoholic, the team's absinth hater, thinks that at this point it wasn't too bad.
  4. You can finally taste the coke in the mix at this point, which is a nice change. Not great though, kind of prefer it at two shots on the coke-o-meter.
