Hennessy VSOP Cognac

Hennessy VSOP Cognac

It's Hennessy VSOP the cognac brandy! Highly regarded as one of the best cognacs of our time by... well I'm not sure. Personally, I don't know my cognac's very well but that is no reason for you to stop reading here! This website is not only to test all of our dreams with coke but also to try new drinks and maybe find a new first love for something.

The Shot

Straight out of the box (or bottle) you'll immediately notice the strong aroma given from Hennessy. You will adjust quickly however and the scent will not seem so strong. It becomes one with you and your nose. For me the smell is like woody oak. It's hard to figure out. I had a similarly hard time deciphering the smell for Teichenné which is another kind of brandy.

Upon tasting the cognac, I was hit with a rather strong bitter punch to the tongue. Maybe I found it so bitter due to the fact the last few drinks tested have been more on the sweeter side of things. Nevertheless, this bitter taste lingers for quite a long period of time. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but it's not quite my thing. I feel like that it most certainly is a 'thing' for many others (possibly French others) and explains the high reputation Hennessy has.

The Bar Test

Now, a lot of people might be thinking "oh gosh you mustn't try this with coke! It's meant to be had straight or on the rocks!" Well, we like to escape the boundaries given by this modern society on drinking fancy drinks (such as Hennessy) and take a walk on the wild side!

Hennessy VSOP mixed with coke is actually quite refreshing. It's not sweet. Even with the added coke. But this is a good thing in our line of testing drinks with coke. More often than not, the coke will make a drink sweeter. In this case the Hennessy with coke remains bitter and tastes surprisingly well with coke. However, the aftertaste is bad. Bad in such a way that you don't really want more. It's a good and bad type of drink. Light versus dark. Good versus evil. So really, give it a go and see what you think. Maybe you'll bear to withstand the aftertaste for that starting flavour unlike myself.

French pirates will love this Hennessy VSOP. The more you drink the worse it seems to become which probably goes for the pirates too. Drinking this with coke can be refreshing for those who are constantly stuck on scotches or bourbons; however, you will have to determine whether or not the after taste works for you. This feels like a drink a lot of people are going to have different tastes with so give it a go and see if it speaks to you.

1. Worse than the shot. Nothing good comes out of one to one Hennessy and coke. Do not trespass.

2. After taste is here being a bitter hell to ruin the drink. Let's move on.

3. Same as 2. No happy days. However, The Alco and I believe this may be due to the amount of Hennessy we've already had which is causing a build up to the lingering bitter after taste.

4. Mostly coke at this point. No point in trying it yourself. We've done that part for you.
