VOK Strawberry Liqueur
The scent of this bad boy is very reminiscent of strawberry medicine, which isn't a bad thing. It doesn't smell bad, but it isn't as inviting as many of the other drinks we have tried. It has quite a nice rose pink/red colour to it that is very translucent and looks pleasant in the light.
The taste is very similar to the smell, it mostly just tastes like strawberry flavoured cough medicine, except with a warming aftertaste with reminds you that there's alcohol in it, but is as close to a burn as you can get from 20% liqueur.
The Bar Test
The coke gains a beautiful rose coloured tinge to it, which is actually really nice to look at. The rose tinged effect is evident enough to make the darkened bubbles in the coke very clear throughout the glass. It has that same class to the colour that 'The Rose' cocktail has. The scent of this is very much a strong syrup-like strawberry smell, similar to like a Hershey's strawberry flavoured syrup. It is very nice and much more inviting than the shot.
Interestingly, the majority of the flavour in the bar test is all strawberry syrup and nothing else. It has a power to it that takes over everything else until you gulp it down and you taste coke. The coke is short lived, firstly tasting like fizz and then becoming itself again for a few fleeting moments as the aftertaste and disappearing forever. The aftertaste then once again leaves the taste of strawberry syrup in your mouth and lasts for a little longer, more or less until your next sip, but becoming stronger and lasting longer after every sip you take.
A very easy shot and tastes really nice with any level of coke. The bonus of this liqueur is it makes the coke look pretty and alone it looks lovely. It's very weak alcohol content wise, so not ideal for getting tipsy, but really nice for a more relaxed evening. Definitely more suited to cocktails, but definitely really easy to drink in any way. A bonus for this liqueur is it is very cheap anywhere you buy it from and many bars do seem to have the VOK range.
- The smell remains the same, while the liquid becomes a translucent crimson colour, which also looks quite nice. Pretty much exactly the same experience as the shot, except somewhere in the middle of the flavour journey we described in the shot section of this review - the coke flavour bobs up its head from the pool of strawberry liqueur that has over taken it, to quickly say hello and disappear again.
- Same colour and the same smell, but now there are bubbles beading through the mixture to show that the coke is starting to make a stand. The taste is once again almost exactly the same, but this time there is no coke taste at all, which instead seems to cancel out with the warm alcohol style aftertaste.
- You can now smell the coke in the scent a little bit, the colour is basically the same, but a little bit darker, becoming very much similar to a Ribena colour, but still holding onto the bubbles which suggest the coke is still in there. The coke finally takes a stand and you can taste a little bit of it throughout the entire taste experience. It remains mostly tasting like strawberry syrup in the main taste and the aftertaste and really nothing else.
- Much darker Ribena like maroon colour now, very dark. The coke scent is now probably just as strong as the strawberry syrup scent, but the strawberry is definitely more noticeable. A fizzy lighter strawberry syrup taste that is fizzy and rounded by the coke taste. The aftertaste is the taste of strawberry syrup and it gets stronger after the rest of the liquid leaves your mouth.
