Gekkeikan Japanese Sake
Not something that is traditionally mixed with coke, but then again - we traditionally don't like rules. Made in honour of the imperial household in Kyoto Japan, prepare yourself for our most random review yet!
The first thing you'll notice with this is the monumental slap you feel against your nostrils from the moment you open the bottle. It may have been made for royalty, but you can tell they were definitely hoping to make a statement! Flavour-wise it falls somewhere between an overly diluted creaming soda and off tasting water, perhaps even starchy water. The taste doesn't linger at all! Apparently this is best enjoyed warm, but we have our doubts that it would improve the flavour, but even more surprisingly sake apparently comes with a great number of scientifically proven health benefits such as: disease prevention (like cancer and Alzheimer's disease), moisturising skin, anti-acing and teeth whitening! Considering it does actually make you feel like partying, it really outweighs the brutal taste if you shot it.
The Bar Test
Smells the same as the shot, this stuff has a lovely potent smell. Really just tastes like you've just had a brutally tasting bit of medicine to try getting over a cold and proceed to try and wash it down with coke. The majority of the aftertaste is coke. Quite honestly, this isn't much different to taking a shot of the sake and washing it down with a chaser of coke, so we aren't entirely sure that mixing it is worth it... it just makes you suffer for longer, but to each their own, you might love it!
Probably stick to drinking it straight or taking shots of it, we can't say we enjoyed the flavours it presented when mixed with coke and we don't imagine it going that well in a cocktail. The health benefits that apparently come with it definitely make it worth it and from experience is does pair nicely with Japanese style meals, such as teppanyaki. This one is really something you have to experience for yourself, but we recommend mentally preparing yourself first!
- The smell is the same, but if anything it tastes worse. The coke brings out a bitter taste in the sake and it isn't pleasant.
- Creates more of a neutral taste, none of us were much of a fan, but it doesn't taste anywhere near as bad, which is a plus. Probably wouldn't drink it like this since taking the shot then drinking the coke would be more enjoyable.
- Actually starts to taste like a normal beverage, the coke becomes part of the drink. They fuse well, but the flavour is still interesting. Imagine mixing a watered down creaming soda with coke to make it taste sweeter. Still has that rice like starch flavour.
- Drinkable, but doesn't really taste like anything. Mostly bland, but think of the health benefits!
