Captain Moran - Black Spiced Rum
The second you see the bottle you, you can notice the deep brown / black colour which screams of the nice sweet flavour you get out of black spiced rums. It's got a nice caramel colour when held up to the light You twist off the lid only to find your nostrils bombarded with scents, most prominently a mix of vanilla, molasses and caramel. There is a slight tinge of spice in the background, but not much - our best could be like some kind of mix of cinnamon and clove. Once out of the bottle and into the glass, the alcohol scent becomes a lot more noticeable, trust us - you'll find it.
Starts with like a clove flavour mixed with molasses, strangely. It's not abrasive and potent at all, or is it you'll drink it and experience some woody notes and vanilla as you swallow. This begins it, you experience a building flavour, it'll slap you in the face with sharpness and you'll cringe, but honestly the experience isn't that bad. You won't hate it if you like black spiced rum, but it might not be for you it almost gives that aniseed flavour at the start, so brace yourself for that. If you don't like rum, probably don't drink this straight, but if you do you'll like it... You won't love it or hate it, but it does leave a nice vanilla and rum aftertaste that sits quite nicely after the abrasive flavour leaves your mouth, which will lead to you finding yourself wanting another sip.
As you drink more the back of the label reveals itself with is a skeleton version of the captain Morgan image with a story... that's a nice addition!
The Bar Test
The entire bar test takes on a nice caramel flavour and smells just like a mix of caramel and vanilla. It is a good sniff. The coke and captain Morgan both take on equal parts of strength to flavour with the captain Morgan supplying pretty much just a caramel and vanilla flavour. Leaves your palate feeling refreshed and the aftertaste leaves you wanting more. It is a simpler version of kraken, but cheaper and easy to see the difference in flavour, we would still grab the kraken hands down if they were both available, but captain Morgan is an alright much cheaper alternative. Nothing really stands out, but it does go down very smoothly, this goes pretty alright and would definitely satisfy you at a house party, you could sink a great many of these without even noticing, so buckle in for a big one!
House party? This is a good, cheap black rum choice and can be found even cheaper if you have a cheeky shop around, but if we were going to the bar we would probably just grab a kraken. This is best drunk with coke or ginger beer, but wouldn't recommend drinking it straight unless you're a straight rum drinker already - not because it's bad, but because it is substantially better with a mixer.
- It's a bit nippy on the nose mostly an alcohol hit with a side of vanilla. The alcohol zaps the tongue as the liquid passes your lips and then your whole mouth is full of vanilla until you swallow where you are zapped with alcohol again. Not bad, mostly just like drinking potently vanilla coke that keeps you awake.
- Still a bit nippy on the nose, but a little sweet. Slaps you in the face on the way down - guaranteed wince. Sweet while in the mouth and definitely not as vanilla flavoured as it was before. We honestly preferred the one shot one.
- A light smell of sweet vanilla. Mostly just a sweetened coke. A bit of a weird experience. Not bad, not as punchy, not quite as good as the bar test. Very simple, very smooth.
- The scent is the same, but almost gone, it's hard to find. Pretty much just coke. Nothing to hate, just alcoholic coke.
